fuji improves usability

at last – fuji fixed my personal numer one usability topic with the X-Pro 1 with the latest firmware update.
now the arrow-down button can be configured to serve as a second fn button and can be used to move the autofocus field frame during shooting. hands – up for fuji that they don’t leave us in the rain and are willing to supply support for the exising products. other manufactureres force you to buy the successor cam and call this their business model! even more features has been announced – keywords focus peaking and further af-improvements

but wait a second before you all start applauding too loud..
..because ever since I can remember, all my nikon dslr were capable of shifting the af-points from version 1.0 on – so fuji just fixed something others designed right straight from the beginning!
and it still takes me one click more compared to nikon since I have to enter the af-frame position-mode first by pressing the arrow-down-button.

still a hurrah from me, since it now feels right and I’m able to operate shooting and adjusting parameters with just one single hand. a definitive ergonomic and efficiency improvement – so keep it going on, fuji-guys :-)

na also – hat es fuji jetzt endlich geschafft *mein* nummer eins ergonomie-thema mit dem letzten firmware update zu beheben.
die pfeil-nach-unten taste auf der rosette kann nun als zweite funktionstaste mit der af-positionsrahmen-verschiebung belegt werden. daumen nach oben für fuji, dass sie auch weiterhin an der verbesserung bestehender produkte arbeiten und die enkunden diesbezüglich nicht im regen stehen lassen – andere hersteller fixen die dinge oftmals erst im nachfolgemodell und nennen das dann noch ihre geschäftsstrategie!
es geht sogar noch weiter mit den verbesserungen – angekündigt sind schärfevisualisierung für manelles fokussieren und weitere (geschwindigkeits?)verbesserungen am kontrast-autofokus.

aber wartet mal eine sekunde, bevor ihr alle zu laut applaudiert..
..denn seit ich mich erinnern kann, konnte ich bei meiner nikon dslr von anfang im aufnahmemodus den fokusbereich verschieben. fuji hat also nur etwas nachgebessert, das andere gleich von beginn an richtig gemacht haben. und ich brauche immer noch einen tastendrück mehr als im vergleich zur nikon.

trotzdem gibt’s ein hip-hip-hurra von meiner seite, fühlt es sich doch nun erstmalig “richtig” an: aufnehmen und einstellen alles nur mit einer hand, das ist definitiv eine ergonomische und zeitsparende verbesserung – also weiter so, ihr fuji-mannen.

urban bike

urban agility is nowadays achieved with alternative transportation, and certainly not with the
car. for well over 100 years, is one of the Fahhrad to the most reliable and coolest ways to
move around in cities.
although most cities – and that’s certainly also true for my hometown linz – pay homage to the petrol guzzlers, a development in the direction of bicycle mobility is imho unstoppable. the bike ist experiencing a revival in the past years – also seen in an aesthetic way, it definitely mutated to a cult object.

in the light of my life age I don’t have to torture myself no longer sitting storngly bent on ultra-sporty and uncomfortable bikes, but instead decided to go for a comfortable, erqonomically correct and also technically contemporary bicycle with gear hub, maintenance-free belt drive and – quite important for a city bike – suitable for rainy days and able to carry small loads!

beauty lies in the eye of the beholder – at least I become weak with this gently curved shape of the (fork)legs ..but see for yourself…

urbane agilität wird heutzutage mit alternativen verkehrsmitteln erreicht, und sicherlich nicht mit dem auto. seit weit mehr als 100 jahren zählt das fahhrad zu den verläßlichsten und schicksten arten, um sich in Städten adequat fortzubewegen.
auch wenn die meisten städte – und dazu gehört sicherlich auch meine heimatstadt linz – noch immer den benzinfressern als den drahteseln huldigen, ist eine entwicklung in richtung mehr fahrradmobilität nicht aufzuhalten. das rad erlebt ein den letzten jahren ein revival – auch in ästhetischer hinsicht, ja es mutiert richtiggehend zu einem kultobjekt.

in anbetracht meines lebensalters muss ich mich nicht mehr stark gerümmt auf ultra-sportlichen und unbequemen fährädern quälen, sondern habe mich für ein bequemes, erqonomisch korretes und ebenso technisch zeitgemäßes Rad entschieden: Nabenschaltung und Wartungsfreiem Riemenantrieb und – weil wichtig für ein stadtrad – regen- & lastentauglich!

Schönheit liegt ja bekanntermassen im Auge des Betrachters – ich jedenfalls werde bei dieser sanft geschwungene Form der (Gabel)Beine schwach ..aber seht selbst..

linz marathon

saturday evening, the weather forecast not too good, moderate temperatures and a certain probability for rain. never mind for me, but saturday will be linz marathon. in the past I’ve never been particularly interested in this event, on the contrary, since the event blocks the streets around my home for half a day – so I tried to avoid contact.

I woke up early the next day, the sun was shining and so I grabbed my x-pro 1, caught the bus and decided to watch the start of the handbikers before returning home for breakfast. but sometimes it’s different than you think – and although I didn’t stay until the first champs reached the finish, there were plenty of nice pictures to take and so I stayed quite longer – and returned home for lunch.

during shooting I really enjoyed the advantage of the x-pro 1 over the E-1 – the optical viewfinder. the special construction of Fuji’s OVF – changing the captured frame size dependant on the focal length and thus offering me to see a wider scene than finally captured – enabled me to foresee the right moment for pressing the shutter. well, at least in theory. since most pictures were taken with the 60mm f2.8 macro lens, I had to deal with the slowest autofocus of all X-Fujinons. prefocusing helped a lot but also brought me a lot of blurred photos with an open aperture.

samstag abend – die wetterprognose für sonntag sind nicht gerade berauschend: mittelmäßige temperaturen und eine erhöhte wahrscheinlichkeit für regen. eigentlich ist es mir egal – ich muss morgen beim linz marathon nicht laufen..
in der vergangenheit war ich nie sonderlich interessiert an diesem event, wurde doch die gegend rund um unser zuhause immer den ganzen vormittag gesperrt.

am sonntag wachte ich (zu) früh auf und – erstaunlicherweise – schien die sonne, sodass ich spontan meine x-pro 1 schnappte, mit dem bus zum start der handbiker um nullachthundert mit der intention fuhr, zum frühstück wieder zuhause zu sein. aber manchmal kommt es eben anders, als ich mir das vorgestellt habe und obwohl ich nicht den zieleinlauf der champions miterlebte, kam ich doch erst wieder zum mittagessen zurück.

während der aufnahmen konnte ich einen vorteil der x-pro gegenüber der E-1 voll auspielen. fairerweise muss ich gestehen, dass mir dieser erst während des shootings richtig bewuss wurde.
der aufnahmerahmen im OVF wird je nach brennweite des objektivs angepasst und macht bei einer brennweite um die 50mm nur ein viertel des sucherfeldes aus, was dem fotografen also erlaubt, ein erweitertes aktionsfeld zu beobachten und somit im richtigen moment den auslöser zu betätigen. da ich einige aufnahmen mit dem 60mm f2.8 makro linse gemacht habe, musste ich leider auch mit dem langsamsten autofokus der gesamten X-objektivserie herumschlagen. vorfokussierung kann hier abhilfe schaffen, liefert aber leider bei offenblende und geringer schärfentiefe auch viele unscharfe ergebnisse.

I’m quite pleased with the overall result, although I missed some great shots, therefore I will give it another try next year – for sure.

jedenfalls bin ich mit den ergebnissen nicht unzugfrieden – wenngleich ich nicht immer jene fotos schoß, die ich vor meinem geistigen auge hatte. daher werde freue ich schon auf die nächste ausgabe des linzer marathons 2014.
