graffiti sessions commendastrasse

i sympathize with street artist!
they really are capable performers and show also a great portion of enthusiasm – they live their vison – chapeau for that..

graffiti has always been my favorite street art, well that may have something to do with the visual experience:
bright and colorful, trendy, loud, 3-dimensional, abstract – and sometimes really deconstucted – including a small portion of rebellion, all in all art not for the majorities – most people even find it destructive – unbelievable ;-)

all properties also can appear in photography – so maybe that’s the connecting context for me?

in late october and short before christmas i barged into an painting session nearby my home, which gave me the possibility to shoot some athmospheric pictures, which you can view here in my gallery.

ich sympathisiere mit den strassenkünstlern!
das sind nicht nur richtige könner, sondern zeigen oftmals auch einen (manchmal unbelohnten) enthusiasmus, der eine wahre freude ist.

graffiti war immer schon meine bevorzugte strassenkunst und das hat wohl auch mit den zu graffiti assoziierten eigenschaften zu tun:
intensiv und farbenfroh, laut, poppig, 3-dimensional, abstrakt – manchmal sogar richtig schön zerlegt (dekomposition) – vermischt mit einer portion rebellion, alles in allem keine massentaugliche kunstform – einige empfinden diese herrlichen werke sogar zerstörerisch – unglaublich ;-)

all diese eigenschaften finden sich teilweise auch in der fotografie wieder – vielleicht ist das der mich zu graffiti verbindende kontext?

ende oktober und kurz vor weihnachten platzte ich in eine “malsession” ganz in der nähe meines zuhauses und hatte die gelegenheit ein parar “athmospärenphotos” [(c) by pius] zu schiessen, die hier in der gallerie zum ansehen bereitstehen.

views of berlin

berlin really is a fascination of it’s own.

I first fell in love with this city during a 5-day-stay back in 2010, when I visited microsoft’s tech ed conference. sadly I had little time during daylight to explore this city, so I promised myself to return soon. during our ski holidays in 2011 we got to know a couple from berlin and stayed in contact since then, which opened up the window for a 3 day visit of my wife after easter in the year after – an opportunity I missed due to a scheduling conflict :(

so we had to come back this year in early summer and enjoyed rain and sun both together. returning to already known places (alex, main station, government district, ..) went along with exploring new sites (tempelhof airfield, pergamon museum, kreuzberg-district, “oberbaum”-bridge, boat trip on the river spree, berlin wall).

it’s the unique combination of new urban life and architecture with the monuments of history, this cultural mixture of it’s inhabitants and crowdy tourists, a neverending, permanent reinvention of districts and areas, which condenses to an incomparable location and generates this unique feeling of having seen not only one sole, but many different cities at once. I never missed the mountains & hills of my home town for a second, although berlin really is embedded in a flat countryside.

berlin – a photographer’s dream! it doesn’t matter if you’re more attracted by humans or patterns and geometry – as I am – if you like it more historic or if you admire avant-garde, you can have it all – no need to decide!
so let me take you through a journey of expressive pictures here – all taken with my fuji x-pro 1 with the xf18-55 zoom. I really like the image quality of the x-trans-sensor. pictures were taken with filmsimulation set to astia and developed in corel aftershot with the help of Sean Pucketts fabulous plugin nostalgia. ironically I really prefer the fuji films settings (astia, provia, sensia and some times velvia :-)

impressions from würzburg

I attended a conference in würzburg this spring and decided to last for two days longer to explore all the sightseeings this nice city has to offer.
personally I really enjoy staying in cities surrounded by wine, since (quality!)drinking mostly goes hand in hand with good food. in addition people seem to be more relaxed and culture in general seems to be more important to the inhabitants.
würzburg has a long and rich history witnessed by the fortress marienberg and würzbzrg residence along some highly valued wineyards like the famous würzburger stein for wines made from the grape sylvaner – all in all perfect conditions for a nice stay.

and indeed we had a great time during sightseeing, enjoying most

sitting at the water’s edge along the river main – between the “old crane” and “old main bridge”,
the magnificent viewpoint to the city on half way to the fortress and of course the sturdy fortress marienberg itself,
spending the evening at the cafe “schönborn” in front of the beatiful “falkenhaus” (house of the falcon) enjoying relaxed bar jazz played by students from germany’s oldest music university,
the residence with it’s really incredible self-supporting roof (a guided tour is an absolutely must!) and
the beautiful courtyard and garden of the juliusspital

the clou: everything in this city is within a comfortable walking distance and two days are sufficient to get an first impression of this cosy town. so enjoy a walk with me through the pics found in my gallery.

what a really lucky guy I am…

a few days ago I just walked in the local photostore to pick up some equipment for my loewe photobag and while paying couldn’t help asking for a delivering date of the fujinon xf27 – the answer came immediate and really unexpected: “yes, we do have one in stock since yesterday!” BONG :-))

after testing af speed and minimal focus distance with a few shots inside the store it took me another hour of thinking and googling, but then returned back and bought the lens.

why did I hesitate? well, I’ve not been quite sure, if the lens was worth buying or if it’s better to wait for the xf23 prime?
on the pro side, since I’m not owning a prime lens near the 35mm ff-format, it definitely does fit well in my existing xf-collection (14, 18-55, 60, 55-200). besides that, I assumed, that I can benefit from the pancake size, offering low weight and a “stealth mode”-design due its smallness, which for sure is also practicable for street-photography.

the xf23 prime on the other hand will offer two stops more – from f2.8 down to f1.4 – and will certainly play in it’s own optical class, providing a different – higher level – playground for us photographers.
for those now asking: what about the xf35? I can respond, that I personally prefer the 41mm focal length of the xf27 over the 53mm of the xf35, seeing the latter already more at the beginning of tele. the fact that the xf27 will therefore allow me easier picture composition in every day shooting, destroyed my last doubts.

so what can a proud owner of this lens tell you?
interestingly this lens carries a “made in china”-tag, despite to its other brothers and sisters. don’t bother a second, quality feeling is alright, the focus ring is nicly damped and still feels like being made of metal – is it metal? think so.
there are plenty of other sites available offering technical data and solid reviews for the lens. what I can remember – and what impressed me – was the more or less constant (center) sharpness of the lens up to f11, so there’s no real sweetspot like on the other xf-lenses. sharpness in general is satisfying for me (with a sharpness setting +1 on the x-pro), but not more (compared to the other xf lenses). however, I’m not too sensible in this area – I normally just increase the local contrast a lttle bit during post processing, so modern software allows me easily to adjust sharpness up to my needs and up to now I seldom felt the need to readjust sharpness on pictures taken with the xf27.

aperture handling needed a little bit getting used to it. interesting to see that I needed a few hours of “re-learning” to set the aperture via the command dial. although I did so for several years with my nikon dslr, my fingers always twiddled on the lens itself.. . nothing really serious, just a personal statement, but it shows quite well, how intuitive the good old fashioned manual aperture ring is and how glad I am, that fuji implemented them on their xf lenses.
also, the left hand needs some regripping during shooting with the xf27 – while normally my left hand supports the lens underneath I now use my forefinger and thumb to bracket the x-pro on top and bottom, since the lens is simply too small to lie comfortably on my hand.

af speed? really fast (in fuji terms) and well, nothing to worry about. it really might be the fastest xf lens s far, but that’s maybe my subjective impression. when it locks the picture, it’s mostly sharp and also showed no hunting so far in low light conditions. af-motor noise is quite loud with a strange, rather scratchy sound.

macro capabilities are moderate, mainly due to the minimal focal distance of about 30 cm. I wish it would be half the distance for such a small lense – why can I do that with the superzooms of cheap compact cameras costing less than half the price of the xf27? it’s a mystery to me, don’t think that there are technical reasons.

after shooting a few days with the lens I can say it fits neatly in fuji’s – and my personal – xf portfolio. it’s not *the* winner compared to other lenses – alone impossible only because of the hefty price tag of €440 – but be fair: that’s not what it was designed for and maybe it adds some marginal return which other xfs lack?
considering the current delivery problems of fujinon xf lenses, I think I took the right decision, and the xf27 will be useful for me in daily shooting situations – future will show.. .

update:
so far the xf27 showed less sensitvity for flares in sunlight conditions, but for convenience I added an extensable, foldable schneider lens hood as well as an uv-filter sole for protection reasons. the bigger diameter of the rubber ring and increase in length also brings an additional benefit: it adds just the necessary millimeters in length to enable me again to hold the x-pro 1 as I’m used to it with all the other lenses – supporting the lens underneath with 3 fingers of my left hand brings back the solid feeling and one stop in low light shooting. plus: it really looks nice! now the lens shows just the right size for an ergonomic operation with the x-pro 1 – wonderful!

the sample photos were taken while visiting the third linzer höhenrausch (thrill of the heights) named “the art of towers” – an summer installation / exhibition on top of the roof of buildings located in the upper ausrian museum quarter near the main shooping road in the heart of the city and being an well visited attraction since the first exhibiton dated back in 2009, where linz has been european capital of culture.

ps: just need to mention, that 3 pictures towards the end of my photo essay were taken with the xf55-200.. . did you notice any difference? I don’t think so ;-)

Les Courses Camarguaises

i regard the bloody spanish bullfight as really disgusting since we once watched young torreros crucifiying the bull. besides that it came clear to my mind, that the bull has no chance at all, it is far away from being a fight between men and animal at eye level.

rescue of our hearts and mood came from watching a course camarquaises in a small village named fontvieilles, where the real hero of the unbloody fight is the bull, which always keeps his life:-)

goal of game is, that the fightors – the razeteurs – collect tessels, which are hidden between the bulls horns.

der spanische stierkampf ist nicht jedermanns sache – auch meine nicht. ich denke noch mit schaudern an einen viele jahre zurückliegenden corrida de toros in arles, bei dem nachwuchstorreros ein furchtbares spiel mit mutigen stieren trieben und durch ihre unerfarenheit den tieren unsagbares leid zufügten. zudem wurde mir damals klar, dass es eben kein kampf auf augenhöhe zwischen tier und mensch ist, sondern dass im ersten und zweiten teil der corrida der stier bereits so geschwächt wirde, dass es für die tiere unmöglich wird, dem torrero noch adequat paroli zu bieten.

zum glück kamen wir damals auch in ein kleines provencalisches dorf namens fontvieilles, in der wir eine sternstunde hinsichtlich stierkampf erlebten, indem wir einer course camarquaises beiwohnten, der form des provencalischen stierkampfes, bei dem das tier der eigentliche held der aufführung ist und bei der auch im gegensatz zur spanischen version nicht der torrero angekündigt wird, sondern der stier :-)

die jungen burschen des dorfes gaben sich die ehre, den auserwählten damen ihren mut und ihre fertigkeit gegenüber dem stier zu beweisen. damit keine ernsthaften verletzungen passieren, trägt jeder stier metallkugeln auf seinen hörnern.
je stier haben die razeteur gennanten männer 15 minuten zeit, ihm zwischen den hörnern befestigte quasten – den cocardes – mit haken – den crocettes – zu entwenden. dies geschieht immer durch ein bestimmtes muster, bei dem die tourneurs – wörtlich: (stier um)dreher – versuchen, den stier so zu wenden und in position zu bringen, dass ein razeteur von hinten tangential am stier vorbeiläuft und ihm mit der crochet eine quaste entreissen kann. dabei springen die razeteurs über die bande, um sich vor dem hinterherlaufendem stier in sicherheit zu bringen – dies ermöglicht spektakuläre bilder, denn manchal springen die wilden stiere einfach auch hinterher :-)

winner is the one, who collects the most of the so called cocardes (the tessels) and so wins beside the money also the heart of the local women.the following pictures were taken during our 2012 summer holiday in south france in the magnificent amphiteatre of arles – cultural heritage of the unesco with a capacity for 25000 spectators.

pro errungene cocard gibt es einen geldpreis, der sich mit fortlaufender zeitdauer erhöht. sieger ist, wer dem stier die meisten quasten entreißt.

die nachfolgenden bilder (hier in der gallerie) entstammen unserem südfrankreich urlaub vom sommer 2012 und entstanden im herrlichen amphitheater von arles – weltkulturerbe der unesco mit einem fassungsvermögen für 25000 zuschauer – mit einer nikon d80.

fuji improves usability

at last – fuji fixed my personal numer one usability topic with the X-Pro 1 with the latest firmware update.
now the arrow-down button can be configured to serve as a second fn button and can be used to move the autofocus field frame during shooting. hands – up for fuji that they don’t leave us in the rain and are willing to supply support for the exising products. other manufactureres force you to buy the successor cam and call this their business model! even more features has been announced – keywords focus peaking and further af-improvements

but wait a second before you all start applauding too loud..
..because ever since I can remember, all my nikon dslr were capable of shifting the af-points from version 1.0 on – so fuji just fixed something others designed right straight from the beginning!
and it still takes me one click more compared to nikon since I have to enter the af-frame position-mode first by pressing the arrow-down-button.

still a hurrah from me, since it now feels right and I’m able to operate shooting and adjusting parameters with just one single hand. a definitive ergonomic and efficiency improvement – so keep it going on, fuji-guys :-)

na also – hat es fuji jetzt endlich geschafft *mein* nummer eins ergonomie-thema mit dem letzten firmware update zu beheben.
die pfeil-nach-unten taste auf der rosette kann nun als zweite funktionstaste mit der af-positionsrahmen-verschiebung belegt werden. daumen nach oben für fuji, dass sie auch weiterhin an der verbesserung bestehender produkte arbeiten und die enkunden diesbezüglich nicht im regen stehen lassen – andere hersteller fixen die dinge oftmals erst im nachfolgemodell und nennen das dann noch ihre geschäftsstrategie!
es geht sogar noch weiter mit den verbesserungen – angekündigt sind schärfevisualisierung für manelles fokussieren und weitere (geschwindigkeits?)verbesserungen am kontrast-autofokus.

aber wartet mal eine sekunde, bevor ihr alle zu laut applaudiert..
..denn seit ich mich erinnern kann, konnte ich bei meiner nikon dslr von anfang im aufnahmemodus den fokusbereich verschieben. fuji hat also nur etwas nachgebessert, das andere gleich von beginn an richtig gemacht haben. und ich brauche immer noch einen tastendrück mehr als im vergleich zur nikon.

trotzdem gibt’s ein hip-hip-hurra von meiner seite, fühlt es sich doch nun erstmalig “richtig” an: aufnehmen und einstellen alles nur mit einer hand, das ist definitiv eine ergonomische und zeitsparende verbesserung – also weiter so, ihr fuji-mannen.

urban bike

urban agility is nowadays achieved with alternative transportation, and certainly not with the
car. for well over 100 years, is one of the Fahhrad to the most reliable and coolest ways to
move around in cities.
although most cities – and that’s certainly also true for my hometown linz – pay homage to the petrol guzzlers, a development in the direction of bicycle mobility is imho unstoppable. the bike ist experiencing a revival in the past years – also seen in an aesthetic way, it definitely mutated to a cult object.

in the light of my life age I don’t have to torture myself no longer sitting storngly bent on ultra-sporty and uncomfortable bikes, but instead decided to go for a comfortable, erqonomically correct and also technically contemporary bicycle with gear hub, maintenance-free belt drive and – quite important for a city bike – suitable for rainy days and able to carry small loads!

beauty lies in the eye of the beholder – at least I become weak with this gently curved shape of the (fork)legs ..but see for yourself…

urbane agilität wird heutzutage mit alternativen verkehrsmitteln erreicht, und sicherlich nicht mit dem auto. seit weit mehr als 100 jahren zählt das fahhrad zu den verläßlichsten und schicksten arten, um sich in Städten adequat fortzubewegen.
auch wenn die meisten städte – und dazu gehört sicherlich auch meine heimatstadt linz – noch immer den benzinfressern als den drahteseln huldigen, ist eine entwicklung in richtung mehr fahrradmobilität nicht aufzuhalten. das rad erlebt ein den letzten jahren ein revival – auch in ästhetischer hinsicht, ja es mutiert richtiggehend zu einem kultobjekt.

in anbetracht meines lebensalters muss ich mich nicht mehr stark gerümmt auf ultra-sportlichen und unbequemen fährädern quälen, sondern habe mich für ein bequemes, erqonomisch korretes und ebenso technisch zeitgemäßes Rad entschieden: Nabenschaltung und Wartungsfreiem Riemenantrieb und – weil wichtig für ein stadtrad – regen- & lastentauglich!

Schönheit liegt ja bekanntermassen im Auge des Betrachters – ich jedenfalls werde bei dieser sanft geschwungene Form der (Gabel)Beine schwach ..aber seht selbst..

walker evans

anybody remembering walker evans? sure – if you’re a pro in the states or probably have heard of walker evans but as an amateur in austria – well I’m not quite sure..
if i hadn’t seen the billboard along the street I take every morning to work, i wouldn’t have got to know mr. walker evans, but the photographic exhibition “decade by decade“ in the upper austrian state museum in linz – see picture above – dedicated to american photographer walker evans made me really curious, as this meant, that this person must have rendered outstanding services to photograpy.

irgendwer, der walker evans kennt? ok – vielleicht die berufsfotografen in den staaten, aber als amateur in linz bich ich mir da nicht so sicher..
wenn ich nicht die plakatwand ebtlang der strasse gesehen habe, die ich jeden tag auf dem weg zur arbeit befahre, dann wäre der name walker evans noch heute ein fremdwort für mich. da diese plakatwand aber für evans foto-ausstellung “decade by decade“ im oberösterreichischen landesmuseum werbung machte, wurde ich neugierig, da sich diese person wohl für die fotografie verdient gemacht hatte.

the exhibition sadly sufferd from a totally underexpose in terms of image illumination, so it was a pain watch the pictures, as everybody had to get really close, which made it impossible to catch an initial impression of the picture belonging to thematical episodes, in which the exhibition was diveded. many people regreted this lacking care of the exhibitor.

the pictures itself were chosen in cooperation with the cincinnati art museum and covered the full lifework of walker evans. i left the exhibition with mixed feelings, some really great picture were shown along imho third-class pictures. most images in common is evan’s documentary, almost clinical style. still the watcher isn’t left without emotions.
all in all an enjoyable amusement on a rainy sunday afternoon.

leider litt die ausstellung unter einer fast unzumutbaren unterbeleuchtung – was auch viele einträge ins ausstellungsbuch bekundeten – sodass jeder besucher mit seiner nase fast das bild berühren musste, um die details zu erkunden, was unmittelbar zur folge hatte, dass es den weiteren besuchern unmöglich war, von geigneter distanz sich eine übersicht zu verschaffen.

die austellung selbst wurde vom cincinnati art museum kuratiert und zeigte auschnitte über alle dekaden von evans werks. ich habe die ausstellung mit gemischten gefühlen erlebt, neben wirklich großartigen bildern, welche den dokumentarischen, nüchternen stil von Evans gut zur geltung brachten – den betrachter jedoch nicht emotionslos zurückließen – waren auch meiner meinung nach wirklich drittklassige bilder zu sehen, die den eindruck erweckten, dass auch noch das letzte bild des kartons vom hintersten dachbodens verwertung finden sollte.
alles in allem ein netter zeitvertreib an einem verregneten sonntag nachmittag.

linz marathon

saturday evening, the weather forecast not too good, moderate temperatures and a certain probability for rain. never mind for me, but saturday will be linz marathon. in the past I’ve never been particularly interested in this event, on the contrary, since the event blocks the streets around my home for half a day – so I tried to avoid contact.

I woke up early the next day, the sun was shining and so I grabbed my x-pro 1, caught the bus and decided to watch the start of the handbikers before returning home for breakfast. but sometimes it’s different than you think – and although I didn’t stay until the first champs reached the finish, there were plenty of nice pictures to take and so I stayed quite longer – and returned home for lunch.

during shooting I really enjoyed the advantage of the x-pro 1 over the E-1 – the optical viewfinder. the special construction of Fuji’s OVF – changing the captured frame size dependant on the focal length and thus offering me to see a wider scene than finally captured – enabled me to foresee the right moment for pressing the shutter. well, at least in theory. since most pictures were taken with the 60mm f2.8 macro lens, I had to deal with the slowest autofocus of all X-Fujinons. prefocusing helped a lot but also brought me a lot of blurred photos with an open aperture.

samstag abend – die wetterprognose für sonntag sind nicht gerade berauschend: mittelmäßige temperaturen und eine erhöhte wahrscheinlichkeit für regen. eigentlich ist es mir egal – ich muss morgen beim linz marathon nicht laufen..
in der vergangenheit war ich nie sonderlich interessiert an diesem event, wurde doch die gegend rund um unser zuhause immer den ganzen vormittag gesperrt.

am sonntag wachte ich (zu) früh auf und – erstaunlicherweise – schien die sonne, sodass ich spontan meine x-pro 1 schnappte, mit dem bus zum start der handbiker um nullachthundert mit der intention fuhr, zum frühstück wieder zuhause zu sein. aber manchmal kommt es eben anders, als ich mir das vorgestellt habe und obwohl ich nicht den zieleinlauf der champions miterlebte, kam ich doch erst wieder zum mittagessen zurück.

während der aufnahmen konnte ich einen vorteil der x-pro gegenüber der E-1 voll auspielen. fairerweise muss ich gestehen, dass mir dieser erst während des shootings richtig bewuss wurde.
der aufnahmerahmen im OVF wird je nach brennweite des objektivs angepasst und macht bei einer brennweite um die 50mm nur ein viertel des sucherfeldes aus, was dem fotografen also erlaubt, ein erweitertes aktionsfeld zu beobachten und somit im richtigen moment den auslöser zu betätigen. da ich einige aufnahmen mit dem 60mm f2.8 makro linse gemacht habe, musste ich leider auch mit dem langsamsten autofokus der gesamten X-objektivserie herumschlagen. vorfokussierung kann hier abhilfe schaffen, liefert aber leider bei offenblende und geringer schärfentiefe auch viele unscharfe ergebnisse.

I’m quite pleased with the overall result, although I missed some great shots, therefore I will give it another try next year – for sure.

jedenfalls bin ich mit den ergebnissen nicht unzugfrieden – wenngleich ich nicht immer jene fotos schoß, die ich vor meinem geistigen auge hatte. daher werde freue ich schon auf die nächste ausgabe des linzer marathons 2014.

lightroom 5 beta vs. capture one

Since I bought my Fuji X-Pro 1 I had to look for a new RAW-converter, because my current one – Corel’s Aftershot Pro aka former Bibble – sadly doesnt’ support the X-Trans-technology up to now. In many ways I still find Aftershot Pro being the class leader: the lean and fully customizable interface with lots of merely free plugins, a smart batch output and scaling performance make this product still an unmatched usablity champion. Bedides that, there’s no need to import pictures, they stay where there are – modifications are handled with sidecar xmps. A IMHO far superior way to enable reorganization.

Alternatives?

What about Silky Pix, which is delivered with the X-Pro 1, with its thousand different windows? Though it undoubtly is capable of delivering good results from Fuji’s RAF I couldn’t fall in love with this product at all, even on a pure rational level. I didnt’ even find the basics like highlight correction, local adjustments, .. – wasted time.

What a joy that Phase One announced Capture One with support for the X-Trans-line at the end of last year. Capture One offers a two month trial period – bravo! – and it prooved to deliver pictures with details and color fidelity. Oddly the Express version misses some useful features like keystoning, local adjustments, soft proofing etc. and has some problems with chroma noise in night shots, which I couldn’t overcome. In addition to that I’m not willing to pay more than the triple price for the pro version.

Then Adobe announced LR 5 Beta and for the first time in my life I couldn’ resist to give it a try. I never felt a need for LR in the past, Bibble / Aftershot doing a good job with my Nikon DSLR and I never wanted a software, which swallows my pics into a database.
But what a surprise, after a day or two I relaized that LR really offerd a elaborate way of getting the job done. Picture import is not worse than in Capture One – at least the pictures can stay where they are – and there are some really nice features like the adapteable UI, the local adjustments, an interactive histogram, the new automated geometric correction, just to name a few. The noise reduction also performes quite well, without any visible chroma, much better than in Capture One, and Adobe did some improvements on the demosaicing of Fuji’s X-Trans-Sensor.
To sum up, the whole package convinced me, so that there’s a good chance, to LR 5 will be added to my shopping cart. Anything on the wrong side? Well, the colour fidelity isn’t quite up to Capture One – have a look at the provided example – CO being much closer to reality and the jpeg output of the X-Pro 1.

Seit dem Kauf meiner Fuji X-Pro 1 war ich bezüglich der RAW-Entwickung unter Zugzwang, denn mein bisheriger RAW-Konverter – Corel’s Aftershot Pro aka former Bibble – unterstützt den X-Trans-Sensor (noch?) nicht. In vielen Bereichen erachte ich Aftershot auch heute noch als anderen Produkten überlegen: ein leichgewichtiges, hochgradig individualisierbares User Interface samt performanter Workflow-Orientierung mit tollen – meist kostenfreien – Plug-Ins und einem anpassbaren Bulk-Batch-Konzept als Outputgenerator machen dieses Produkt aus meiner Sicht zum unerreichten Usability-Champion. Die Performance mit voller Skalierbarkeit auf Mehrkernprozessoren sei nur nebenbei erwähnt.
Zudem erfüllt Aftershot einer meiner bisherigen Muss-Anforderungen: das Arbeiten mit den Bildern erfolgt auf Dateiebene mit sidecar xmps. Kein Zwang, Bilder in Datenbanken zu importieren. Umstrukturieren von Bildern ist damit ein Kinderaspiel – ganz im Gegensatz zu Bildern, welche in Datenbanken organisert sind.

Nun waren die Alternativen für den X-Trans-Sensor ja bis vor Kurzem nicht wirklich breit gestreut.

Mit Silky Pix, das mit der X-Pro 1 mitgeliefert wird, bin ich nach einigen Versuchen schon aufgrund der knorrigen Bedienoberfläche mit den zahlreichen Fenstern nicht wirklich warm geworden. Eine Untertreibung. Ich habe so gar nichts gefunden, wo ich ansetzen könnte: Anpassung Spitzlichter? Lokaler Kontrast? Intuitiv? Fehlanzeige!

Und so war es eine willkommene Abwechslung als dann Capture One seine volle Unterstützung der Fuji X-Serie ankündigte.
Was für Unterschied! Volle 2 Monate Zeit die Software auszuprobieren. Toll, dass dabei Capture One in beiden verfügbaren Versionen – Express und Pro – getestet werden kann. Konklusio: Eine moderne Oberfläche samt guter Internethilfe, Detailreichtum und gute Farbtreue. Aber leider auch ein Performancemonster und ebenso leider nur mit Datenbank, wenngleich wenigsten die Bilder nicht importiert werden müssen.
Leider wurde die Express-Version arg beschnitten – keine geometrische Bildkorrektur, keine lokalen Korrekturen, kein Soft-Proofing. Vor allem aber bin ich mit der Rauschunterdrückung nicht klar gekommen – bei high ISO-Aufnahmen hatte ich immer massenhaft chromatischen Rauschen, der ich selbst durch Sättigungsreduktion im lilavioletten Bereich nicht Herr werden konnte. Zudem ein signifikanter Preisunterschied zwischen beiden Versionen, den ich nicht gewillt war und bin zu zahlen. Schlechtes Produktmarketing, denn selbst als Amateur braucht man fast alle Features der Pro Version – naja, zumindestens alles bis auf tethered shooting.

Und dann kam Adobes LR 5 Beta.
Und erstmals konnte ich der Versuchung der Installation auf meinem Rechner nicht widerstehen. Bisher hatte ich dazu keine Veranlassung, Aftershot verrichtete klaglos seinen Dienst und LR, das LR, das war für mich eher das Feinbild, das alles in seiner Datenbank verschlingen wollte.
Und siehe da, ich wurde eines Besseren belehrt und war einigermaßen perplex. Alles da, was ein Fotograf so braucht, bis hin zu liebevollen Details, welche sich erst auf den zweiten Blick offenbaren, zB. das interaktive Histogramm oder die Anpassungen am UI nach eigenen Bedürfnissen. Ein in Summe gut durchdachter Workflow, der Bildimport nicht schlimmer als bei Capture One – wenigstens kännen die Bilder physikalisch dort bleiben, wo sie sind und nur die Bildbearbeitungsschritte in der Datenbank abgelegt werden. Und die Rauschunterdrückung? Ganz ohne chroma noise – jedenfalls meilenweit besser als jene von Capture One. Zudem wurden einige bisherigen Schwachpunkte beim Demosaicing des X-Trans-Sensors verbessert (Stichwort: Schmieren) – kurzum, ein Paket, das mich in Summe überzeugt, in der 5 Version sogar mit der bisher fehlenden Geometriekorrektur. Wer hätte das alles gedacht? Ich am allerwenigsten.
Schattenseiten? Ja – natürlich. Die Farbtreue – zumindestens bei Nachtaufnahmen. Hier wandelt sich das Bild – kein Vergleich zu Capture One. Beispiel gefällig? Bitte sehr:

I was lucky to buy Capture One Express edition with voucher for a little more than €50. So plenty of time left to play with the Beta 5 and do some more comparisions.

Konklusio?

Nun, bei einem Preis für Capture One Express mit Rabattvoucher von etwas über €50 brauch wohl keiner über einen Kauf allzu lange nachzudenken. Und LR bleibt weiterhin unter Beobachtung. Soferne es sich keinen groben Patzer leistet wird es wohl diesmal in meinem Warenkorb landen. Bis dahin bleibt aber noch genügend Zeit ein paar gute Bilder mit der X-Pro 1 zu schiesssen.. .
